Inspiration Dispatch #2
Dream Work Wednesday 07/02/25
Welcome, friend.
You’re currently reading Dream Work Wednesday, a curation of creations - made by the humans at Challenger Media House - for humans just like you.
We created this newsletter to help connect people to deep, meaningful, creative work - because all could use a little more inspiration.
Whether you’re an agency director, a DP, a content creator, a client, or just someone who loves things made with love - we hope this lights you up inside.
To submit a project (yours or otherwise) for consideration, email: dreamwork@challengermediahouse.com
Let’s get into it.
The First Mark - Jordan Bogart
“Inspired by the life of my Grandfather and Grandmother. If you have a passion in life, you have to just do it. Make the first mark.” - Jordan Bogart
We love the beautiful cinematography, the patient pacing, and the incredibly earnest interview. The piece develops into an honest character study exploring the risks and rewards inherent to creative living. Courage, curiosity, beauty… we love it.
am i real? am i here? am i listening? (live in a Garage) - Joey Brodnax
This piece is a fascinating reinvention of the performance music video - blurring the lines between documentary and dramatization, and even between live and pre-recorded performances.
We love the high noise floor, color contrast in the lighting, commitment to a long steadicam oner, and wild anamorphic lens choice.
It’s always a joy to see filmmakers and performances blend into one cohesive unit, and the improv dance done in this video is a fantastic demonstration of that unity.
The Gnarly Bay Story - Gnarly Bay
Demo reels for creative companies tend to be little more than a montage of pretty footage. We would know, as our hand has often been caught in that cookie jar. It’s just so damn easy to cut a music montage, but it’s always been clear to us that the extra effort to tell an actual story goes an incredibly long way. This takes us to the our friends at Gnarly Bay - a full-service production studio who has really mastered the art of storytelling. Their demo reel is a perfect demonstration of the magic of story.
We love the honesty, the vulnerability, the mission, and the deep freaking beauty. It takes mastery to convey so much depth in 3 minutes. Gnarly Bay is leading the way for storytellers everywhere. Look for our story soon.
See it Differently - BritBox
This advertisement for a British television show streaming service showcases the magic of artistry and imagination in a brand new way, via a motion-controlled robot arm and some fancy match-cut wizardry.
Ok we’ll confess - we have a soft spot for incredibly complicated technical concepts. Why do it the easy way when you could do it the fun way?
We love the commitment to practical FX, the very cleanly integrated VFX plates (who can name them all?), and the incredible conceit of peeking behind the process that allows movie magic to happen as an invitation to enjoy British movie magic.
Free to Move - Kate Dearman
“Free to Move to move was created in honor of Dr. Alyssa Lokits. Their mission is to help create a world where every woman can move confidently and safely outdoors. My goal as a director for this project was to create a piece that felt empowering, not fearful, while still giving the proper attention and sensitivity to the subject matter. This one-minute brand anthem is part of a larger project that encompasses 6 educational videos aimed to equip women with tools and strategies to stay safe when moving outside.” ~ Kate Dearman
We love how little this feels like a safety training video. The organic visuals really set it apart from the pack, feeling closer to a big-budget airline safety briefing than your traditional OSHA snooze-fest. It’s crazy how such a simple shift in approach changes the tone of the whole experience. We also love the mission of increasing women’s confidence and equipping them with tools to be safe outdoors - because we’re all better when we’re Free to Move.
R U OK? - Ogilvy
The PSA is probably most known as the hub for dorky propaganda, ranging from reminders that you wouldn’t steal a car (so why would you steal a movie?) - to Sarah McLachlan guilt-tripping you into becoming the literal arms of an angel. For better or worse, as broadcast TV placements have become less of a focus for distribution, the PSA has become a lost art. The team at Ogilvy managed to revive the dying format to open a candid conversation around mental health.
We love the core insight - we talk about so many weird things, but so rarely ask how someone is really doing. We love the subtle pull-out creating more and more space between ourselves and the men having the conversation, eventually revealing all our other “narrators” observing the scene playing out. It’s a beautiful vignette which unfolds from a simple portrait into a diorama of isolation, with a poignant call to action.
Live Again - Live from the Lab - Braiden Sunshine
Braiden Sunshine is one of the sneakiest members of the Challenger family. You probably wouldn’t even recognize him now, but a decade ago he was a semi-finalist on The Voice at the ripe young age of 15. Safe to say, the dude can sing.
He’s recently begun shifting his identity from singer to artist, releasing an EP that blends untold deep musical influences into a deeply original experience straight from Braiden’s soul. He recently performed for Telefunken Microphones Live at the Lab series, and absolutely sent it. One of our favorite easter eggs is that the band is made up of Braiden’s friends and family who he’s been playing with since he started singing at 5 years old. Team work makes the dream work.
We love a good comeback story, we love winning with your friends, we love the creative and technical depth that gets put into these live performances, and we love doing it all in a way the world has never seen before. Long Live the Dream indeed, Braiden Sunshine.
Meet Chris Dixon - VF Brands
We’re biased - we helped on this one. This project was set up by the incredible team at Skillscout in partnership with VF brands (Vans, The North Face, Timberland, etc) as part of their ongoing hiring initiatives. We got brought in to help design and execute the deeply cinematic approach to Chris’s journey as a designer, and we’re so proud of how it came together.
We love that it feels more human that corporate. We love the ultra-wide aspect ratio, perfect for the massive screens at Timberland’s in-person orientations. We love presenting Chris with the respect and honor he deserves as an artist. We love the courage to stay with the heart of the story and keep it simple. We love the sound design and integration of archival footage. We love any time you can produce a kick-ass film ahead of schedule, under budget, and having fun every step of the way.
We’re so grateful for Agencies like Skillscout (Shoutout Alex and Abby) who are doing the work to find deep stories inside big brands, and trusting people like us to make them sing. Team work really is dream work.
That’s it for week two!
What started as a dream to cut through the algorithm and facilitate human connection around meaningful work has already surpassed our expectations - thank you to everyone who has submitted, subscribed, and told a friend.
We’d honestly love to know - what was your favorite piece this week?
If you want to submit your work, your friends work, or something that inspires you, email dreamwork@challengermediahouse.com and we’ll see you back here next Wednesday.
